2016 Batcave Masters - Day 1

We begin day 1 and the tournament in the early hours of the morning, with a couple of us meeting at Redfern. From there we will be picking up a couple of New Zealanders from the airport.

It's going to be quite a long day....

Winners of the Pingolf competition, with prizes and trophies handed out on the second day. Richard Rhodes takes 1st place.

Teaser - Upcoming Pinball Player Feature

You might recall that when the site launched, we had the very first gamethesystem.co player feature with Paul Jones, which you can check out in the people section of the site or click directly through here.

The player feature section is something we are very excited about and one of the main reasons the site was started - to promote and explore the people side of gaming, and reveal a bit more about the characters and stories that make the hobby so interesting. We wanted to do this in a way that was creative, visual, immediate and impactful. The idea was to produce these on a semi regular basis, once every month or two.

These player features do take time; first of all to organise, then to shoot (which takes the better part of a day for all involved), and finally to develop and present. Certainly an effort that is greatly appreciated here, and the results are something we are very pleased to offer to the gaming community, be it pinball or other.

The great news is that we are almost finished the second player feature, with post production well under way. We expect to have it all ready in about a week or two, but for now we will throw out a little subtle hint as to who our next player is. Below is a glimpse into the set of shots we have produced - who sits in this chair? Find out soon!

Batcave Masters Player Spotlight 21 of 21 - Andrew Waszkiewicz

Notes: Some people retire from competitive pinball because they’ve had enough, they no longer find it fun, it makes them angry, or they just aren’t doing so well (sometimes a combination of all four!). Andrew on the other hand had a child and suddenly found spending the time on pinball a little difficult. Something that most new fathers can likely empathise with. A player who in his past life swept the competition aside in the 2013 Wildball League, and seemingly effortlessly dominating almost every event he entered, he had a lot of people thinking he was becoming unstoppable. Well he was stopped, as we know, as little baby Oliver had other plans for dad's immediate schedule. But now life and babies and all of those things have started to calm down a little, Andrew has started getting back into the swing and spin of the silver ball. Celebrating his return to pinball the only way he knows how, casually winning the 2015 Z Ball League final, and a Bram Stoker's Dracula pinball machine for his troubles. He’s still yet to find the rhythm and momentum he had a few years back, with ups and downs in his results, but you can be sure if he finds that rhythm come Batcave, that 1st place trophy may be going to a proud new dad.

Batcave Masters Player Spotlight 20 of 21 - Luke Marburg

Notes: There are all sorts who play pinball - lawyers, doctors, IT professionals, builders, artists, and yes, even professional gamblers. Luke is the latter, and subsequently a perfect fit for competitive pinball play; knowing the rules, your opponents, and how to take advantage of them in order to predicate the best outcome, is an integral part of the game. Something that Luke would be very good at considering his profession then, and evidenced by the results he achieves in his home city of Melbourne. One of the very skilled players coming out of that region, Luke also noticed the lack of organised tournaments in Victoria compared with other eastern states, and set about building a community, leagues, and a tool for promoting and supporting pinball. Along with the website he built from the ground up, pinballscore.com, which provides information on where people can play competitive pinball, and updates live results for competitors and followers alike, the Melbourne pinball scene is now very strong and you could argue it was Luke’s hard work and dedication that this has become the case. A generous proponent of the game too, there’s no holding cards close to his chest when it comes to offering tournament structure advice and IFPA rule translation; Luke is only too happy to help us all navigate and enjoy the sometimes complex nature of competitive play.

Magic Hands Super Selfie League April Final

The final for the April Magic Hands Super Selfie League was had last night at the Courthouse Hotel, Newtown. A great turn out and - as is often the case in this venue - much merriment and beverage consumption was had.

Don't forget, the Magic Hands fun and games continues this month at the Henson Hotel in Marrickville. Where else in Australia can you play the very rare America's Most Haunted from Spooky Pinball?! Not many places that's for sure! Head to the 'post a score' page to show us your selfie taking skills (and scores I guess).

Notes: At the top of Australian competitive pinball there are four names that have dominated the scene for years, and Robert Macauley is one of those names. We have talked about Rob a fair bit before, mainly due to the PAPA and IFPA World Championships that were held just recently in the USA, of which he participated. Rob is a quiet man who likes to get on with the job, with a list of achievements that do a lot of the talking for him. Not just an accomplished pinball player; winning the 2015 Lake Macquarie Open, 2014 Auckland and Christchurch Championships, and the Timezone Supanova National Grand Final. He is also one to watch out for on video games, with a jaw dropping 74 1st place world records on Twin Galaxies, and a further 310 registered placings on the same renowned site. He is obviously a person who loves to compete then, but Rob is also approachable and kind hearted. A welcome combination from someone so accomplished, and thankfully, a common combination amongst fellow competitors in the pinball community.

Batcave Masters Player Spotlight 18 of 21 - Matthew Venables

Notes: Matt’s scores are like a rash across the inner Sydney region, where you’d be hard pressed finding a grand champ score which isn’t claimed by the initials MJV. From his local down the road - The Lord Raglan Hotel - to any number of locations in Newtown including the Courthouse Hotel, good luck getting on the score boards of these well stocked pinball locations. Quite an amazing skill set considering he hadn’t touched a pinball machine in his life until around four years ago. So the scores are out of reach for the ordinary human being, but Matt has yet to manage capitalising that into a major tournament win, which surely couldn’t be too far away one would think. Though perhaps him being affectionately known as the Australian Josh Sharpe (his tendency to exclaim profanities whilst playing) is his greatest curse - as we know Josh is yet to take a major title himself in the USA. The originator of the ‘Hello Sailor’ move, Matt's not just an animated and highly skilled player, he’s also a professional photographer, and the Founder and Director of 107 Projects, which the website best describes as ‘A post-industrial, multidisciplinary creative space located in the cultural melting pot of Redfern cultivated by a team of artists, musicians, poets and passionate creatives to become a vanguard for public engagement and social enrichment through the arts’. So a keen creative and artist without doubt, which can be seen in his creative endeavours in the pinball community, such as photography for this site, podcasting, video work, and any number of creative aspects that he can get his hands into. A true patron of the arts and the silver ball.

Notes: Yes it’s true, Edy will be returning from his semiretirement to play in the Batcave Masters once again. Like all of us pinball tragics, it’s hard to stay away from the silver ball, and I guess it does help that he will be there to help run the tournament anyway… Edy was the former Australian number one player, a title he lost when he stopped playing - funnily enough. Though to be fair to the other two players who were snapping at his tail - Peter Watt and Richard Rhodes - Peter was well on the way to passing Edy naturally, and all three players were trading places almost weekly. The battle at the top was fierce, whilst us small fries fought for the left overs below the surface. You could also argue Edy has the most impressive record in major tournaments for an Australian player, and is most certainly the Australian player that has achieved the best result on the world stage - coming in at 20th during the 2013 IFPA World Championships in Germany (which is really a 10th place if you combine the ties and look at strict finishing position). If you aren’t seeing Edy destroying the score boards of every pinball machine he touches, he’s fixing them - a talented pinball technician, he is the reason why pinball tournaments run so well, as he gets them in competition spec before and keeps them running during. Without him working tirelessly for weeks on end, there would be no Batcave Masters for all of us to enjoy.

Notes: What a big contribution the Pinball HQ Coogee Diggers league has done for Australian pinball, with Pat yet another player emerging from this great weekly competition set up by tournament director Norbert Snicer. Not just doing well as a league and introducing new people to pinball, but also introducing the wider pinball community to these incredible players. Pat is one of the most successful of these players with an amazing 21 league night wins, and countless times the runners up in 2nd or 3rd. Besides league results, he’s also managed a 4th place in the 2016 Pinball HQ Marathon, and a 5th in both the 2015 IFPA Australian Championship Series and the previous Batcave Masters - two of the toughest competitions Australia has ever held. Pat is a friendly, reserved and humble person, who prefers to let his playing do most of the talking. And as one of the countries fastest rising stars, you may just want to listen to what his game has to say!

Notes: Terry cut his teeth in the Newcastle pinball scene with regular events such as the Newcastle Pinball League and Pinfest, as well as one off events such as the Newcastle Supa Putt competition, and CruiserCade. Since then Tez has been involved in any number of leagues and tournaments including the Z Ball and Wildball leagues, and has also twice made the trip across the pond to New Zealand for the Kiwi Pincade annual extravaganza. Not one to just sit back and play pinball, he also runs events himself with the Supa Putt Pin-Golf Challenge, and now the first super selfie league in the Newcastle area; the Newcastle Monthly Open. Notes: Where do you start with a player like Richard Rhodes? One of only three people to have attained the rank of number one in Australia along with Steve Edwards and Peter Watt, and one of only three to have cracked the top 100 in the world. Richard is without a single doubt one of the best players in the world, and will rack up scores on machines that even exceptionally good players can only dream about. The great thing about Richard is that not only is he a very serious player who will exploit the table for everything it can give - as the best players in the world will do - but he absolutely loves others just enjoying the game; he gets a genuine kick out of someone ‘blowing it up’, even if it’s against him in a match. Sometimes this enthusiasm can be seen as blunt and to the point commentary or criticism, but it is just a manifestation of his passion for high level play. An ambassador of events that he believes in (New Zealand Pincade in particular!), Richard wants you to enjoy competitive pinball as much as he does. If you get to play Richard at a pinball meet or event, just keep a cautious eye out - the chances of Tim Chapman man-hugs in the area dramatically increases when Richard is around.

Z Ball Pinball League Kicks Off 2016

The Z Ball Pinball League, now running for it's 12th year in a row and giving away 11 pinball machines in previous years, is back for 2016. And unlike those previous years, this time Roger Z is giving away 2 pinball machines as prizes! How ridiculous is that?!

The Z Ball Pinball League is arguably the most social pinball competition going, with Roger being a professional event organiser he certainly ensures everyone has a good time regardless their skill level or ability to commit to rigorous schedules. It all kicks off tonight at the Courthouse Hotel, Newtown, at 7pm! Go to the Z Ball website to see further details.

Notes: There’s something about builders, Coogee, and pinball it would seem. As along with Jack Hutchinson who we looked at in spotlight 12, Paul also cut his teeth at the Pinball HQ League held at Coogee Diggers Club each week, and is also in the builders game. Unlike Jack however, Paul is still based in Sydney and still predominately attends this long running eastern suburbs league event, and doing pretty well too - he’s won eight of them, and come second too many times to mention. Besides league placings, Paul has also finished well in large tournaments such as 4th place in both the 2014 and 2015 Pinball HQ Marathons, and a 2nd place in the NSW State Final of the Timezone Supanova Pinball Championship. Not just a keen player and competitor, Paul is known to have one of the nicest collections in the region, and has recently moved into operating his machines too, including locations such as City Heroes in Sydney CBD. A very proud father as well, his six year old son Kerby recently won the under ten category at the 2016 Pinball HQ Marathon. A knack for the silver ball obviously runs in the family!

Notes: Originally entering the pinball scene in NSW with the Z Ball League in Newtown, and the Pinball HQ League in Coogee, Jack (as he is known to some, rather than John) moved back to his home state of QLD due to his involvement in the family business - Hutchinson Builders, which has been established for over a century. Not all work and no play, Jack has continued his rapid ascension up the ranks of Australian pinball players, and has been significantly involved in the regions leagues and major competitions. He also founded and runs the Houseball League in QLD which borrows the successful formula that Wildball League started in Sydney - a rotating group of hosts opening up their home and private collections to competitors. Jack is a great competitor and always happy to chat all things pinball and life in general. He’s a pleasure to watch play too, with a very unorthodox stance and play style that makes the spectacle of playing these giant machines come to life.

Notes: Only competing for two years, Brett has already accomplished more than most - represented the country in the IFPA World Pinball Championships in the USA, won an Australian major tournament with the 2014 IFPA Australian Championship Series, and ranked 5th in the country. There’s not much more you could ask for in such a short time, and you could only imagine it getting better from here. Brett would most certainly be looking to improve upon his last Batcave Masters placing however. Certainly an unexpected result considering he did go on to win the Batcave Masters Pin-Golf side tournament, and place 7th in the other side tournament. By all measures he will be a favourite to win the 2016 event. Along with partner Naiomi, the duo also travel frequently and quite considerable distances to attend events all over NSW and in Queensland. A welcome effort to be sure, as the pair are some of the nicest folk you could run into at any pinball gathering.

Notes: Andrew’s recorded competitive history in the IFPA is but a glimpse in the overall history of the hobby for this taxation lawyer. A former operator, and now seasoned collector and owner of one of the most desired selection of machines, Andrew comes with a wealth of knowledge on game rules, facts and tidbits. Specialising in the solid state machines of the late 70s and through the 80s, he is both a great asset to his opponents to glean tips, and a great hindrance if faced in competition. Beyond the game rules and play knowledge, he also possesses a passion for game theory and competition structure. Putting that knowledge to good use, Andrew has been instrumental in helping the Wildball Pinball League become such a great success, as well as organised and ran the 2014 IFPA Australian Championship Series major competition, which without him would not have taken place. Often seen flipping and catching a coin inbetween rounds, Andrew can also share some pretty entertaining gambling stories if you feel like a laugh.

Notes: Readers of this site should be reasonably familiar with Naiomi, as she has featured in a few articles now. Having just returned from a whirlwind tour of the USA with the PAPA World Championships, and IFPA World Championships, she and partner Brett are frequent travellers and competitors across NSW, the country, and now internationally. Not only is Naiomi a keen competitor, the highest ranked female player in the country, and now the dual 2016 PAPA World Championship Split Flipper champion, but she is also one of the friendliest faces in Australian pinball. Always smiling, having a laugh, doing a jig, and forcing fellow competitors out of their social shells - who knew Rob Macauley could sing!

Notes: One of a number of very skilled players that have surfaced out of the Pinball HQ Pinball League based in Coogee, Paul has quickly become one of Australia’s most accomplished competitors. Having finished 2nd place at the 2013 Newcastle Pinfest tournament, Paul has gone from strength to strength since, including a 1st place in the 2015 Batcave Masters Side Tournament, 2nd place at the 2014 IFPA Australian Championship Series, 2nd place at the 2016 Pinball HQ Marathon, and of course winning the big one at the 2015 IFPA Australian Championship Series. With these placings and many others, Paul has an incredibly impressive average finishing placing of 4th, and is rated 23rd in the world in the IFPA player vs player metric (the second highest rated player in Australia behind Peter Watt). With such great and quick success, you might not expect Paul to be an easy going guy and so easily approachable, but he is. He was also nice enough to take part in the first Player Feature for gamethesystem.co, and you can catch a further glimpse into that right here.

Obviously bitten by the bug from that event onward, Nathan went on to found the highly regarded Wildball Pinball League in Sydney. A completely new idea at the time, Wildball sees generous hosts volunteer their private collections and game rooms for a monthly meet, that allows competitors to travel all over the state and see some of the most amazing collections Australia has on offer. Nathan also volunteers his time to help organise, set up, and run some of the countries largest tournaments such as the Australian Championship Series. With Wildball now in it’s 4th year, it and Nathan’s contribution to growing the hobby is unmistakable. All for the love of the game.
